I have only recently started to research my family and with the help of the 1911 census have found that my Great Grandfather James Kirby and his brother John Kirby spent time in Winson Green Prison It would appear (waiting for confirmation) that they both had been in trouble with the police

She passed away in 1964 after giving birth to my father We understand that she was born to a Thomas George Kirby and Mary Kirby (maiden name not known), Thomas passed away before she was married (believed to be c 1929) and we know nothing about Mary We believe that they had strong links to Aston and were believed to be quite poor

The Kirby family , not just yours , but the whole 'clan' appear to have a colourful past, I recently read an article about Birmingham 'gangsters' and it was primarily about the Peaky Blinders but it said that the Kirby family in the 20s were so notorious that the people of the City were afraid to testify against them

Welcome to the Forum 1917 would mean that a member would have had to be maybe 100 years old to have known your grandparents and our oldest member is, I believe, 93 Using the Search Engine, top right hand corner of every page, there is at least one mention of Kirby Road

Hi! lazyboybrum, sorry not sure if I can help with your question BUT I've been looking into my family history and I had an uncle George KIRBY and auntie Floss KIRBY who I believe had a baby daughter called Edith Georgina and they lived in Cuckoo Cottages according to 1938 9 census Floss had a younger brother called FRANK plus other siblings

You would be right Old times, Roy Kirby worked in both Jack's Henry's yards back in the day, and Jack was Roy's uncle but as time went on it would be Henry who ended up with both yards, the one in Frankfort Street and the one in Gr Russell Street, this was dew to the fact that Jack went down for along time so Henry bought Jack out

Fred Kirby worked in the stores at BSA Tools, Kitts Green, he lived by the Glebe pub, every one got on ok with him until one day he went into a rage throwing chairs etc about and was sacked, the Kirby family ancestors lived in Summer Lane and had a bad reputation, whether they were involved in Garrison Lane i don`t know

did any of you encounter this i did at the clinic in john bright st i used to have to go once a week to sit in front of some sort of heater with goggles on and be stripped to the waist i dont know from that day to this why i had this i never will now because my mom and dad are know longer here

Do any members have information about James J Grindrod, the fifteen year old gang member who served a three month prison sentence for wounding a rival gang member around 1883 I think he may be related to my 89 year old husband whose mother was a Grindrod father was a self-styled Peaky Blinder who finished his fighting days in the Kirby Gang
