- Tufted Duck x Pochard? Brandenburg Germany - BirdForum
What we glimpse of the bill pattern looks OK for a hybrid (but could also still be OK fro Tufted duck) White on the base of the bill is also very common in this cross (though pure Tufted duck can also show this) Therefore I think you could have a hybrid Tufted duck x common pochard there, but can´t exclude a pure tufted duck
- How can I tell the difference between Common Pochard . . . - BirdForum
Head and bill shape are pretty distinct between the two species; F pochards have a large mostly darkish bill with a whitish flash (often appears silverish) close to the bills tip, F redheads have a more delicate bill, mostly silver with black on the tip and base of the bill and also has a whitish flash close to the tip + headshape of F pochard
- Hybrid Pochard x Red-Crested Pochard? Nottingham, UK
Also the head colour is a little chestnutty, and does not glow like RC Pochard does, but maybe it's just a dull day Since I can't see any other evidence of Common Pochard, (Aythya ferina), particularly colour of bill, colour of flanks, and perfect white "shoulders", I think your bird is 'just' an RC Pochard (Netta rufina)

- Duck hybrid, February 2025, Austria - BirdForum
I know only one documented male Common Pochard x Greater Scaup (in Gillham and Gillham 1996) that really appears to be that cross: pale grey mantle and scapulars, white flanks in breeding plumage and a slightly more pochard head shape with a bluegrey bill with a small black tip mantle and flanks pale greyish in eclipse plumage
- Common pochard or Canvasback - Japan - BirdForum
Are they Canvasbacks or Common pochards? I saw them last week in the pref Niigata, Japan The beak looks longer than Common pochard's, but I guess it's not enough to ID such a rare (in this region) bird
- presumed hybrid Red-crested Pochard x Tufted Duck - BirdForum
RCP x Common Pochard is quite a variable combination and your bird really looks like one to me: amount of black on the neck, bill and body shape, color of the back (somewhat intermediate) If Joern is around, he might shed some more light on this bird
- The RARE Hybrid Pochard x Tufted Duck - BirdForum
Not only is it a clear Ferruginous x Common Pochard hybrid, it's labelled as such! Interesting re sex ratios causing an increase in hybridisation - in my experience, both Common Pochards and Tufted Ducks seem to have much higher numbers of males than females at most urban sites
- Wigeon or Pochard Ireland? - BirdForum
pochard and wigeon, the bigger group clearly have pale foreheads and pale pinkish breasts There are some pochards in the scattered ones around There are some pochards in the scattered ones around Reply
- Canvasback or just a Pochard Central Japan - BirdForum
Although we have lots of Pochard here over the winter, this bird struck me as a little different The first point is that it has a completely black bill, without the usually very clear grey black divide of the Common Pochard It seems to have quite a long neck Then it was by itself, not with the other Pochards in a nearby pond which they like
