Comic book boards are substantially larger with guidelines for the safe area, bleed, etc The reason being that details are easier to include when you are drawing larger and reducing the size So those boards are actually to scale but not the size they are printed and have play at the edges where part of the images might get cut off

so i’m assuming they use large sheets of paper and then condense it into book format yeah and the format depends what kinda market the comic will be published under (eg manga uses b or a paper sizes, american comics iirc use bristol board, and the european kind i forget what's called) it's called industry standard and it's easier that way for the printers
