Back in the late 80's, just to the east of Cooters was the strip club, like Brother mentioned, then about halfway down was, in my opinion, the best 80's dance club Xcess They were the most "underground" industrial venue and even had a few good live bands every once in awhile (Fishbone, The Judys, Faith no More, Living Colour)
