- Best way to get to Eilean Donan Castle from Edinburgh
Then next day you could see the Castle and leave Dornie for Inverness at either 1154 or 1419 The 1419 gives lots of time at the Castle The second one is back in Inverness at 1615, then catch the 1726 train back, change at Perth or the 1853 direct

I agree with the other replies that Eilean Donan Castle is worth seeing I visited it last September and enjoyed my tour very much It's in a beautiful location on a promontory overlooking a lake, has a very interesting history, and the docents and signage were very helpful And there is a nice visitor center with a café not far from the
- Eilean Donan from Oban - Rick Steves Travel Forum
Eilean Donan is the iconic Scottish castle that appears on all the tins of shortbread etc The outside is stunning but like Skyegirl says, the inside is quite disappointing It is a long way - allow 3 hours each way to drive

It's hard to say Each one is very individualistic So, if you're burnt out on castles by the time you get to Eilean Donan and just want to get to Skye and start walking in the Cuillins, then just stop and grab the picture The best position is to the west of the castle : ) I didn't even see Eilean Donan until my 9th or 10th visit Pam
- Driving from Eilean Donan Castle heading to Edinburgh
I would suggest stopping in near Boat of Garten or Aviemore After you leave Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, you'll probably want to stop along the north shore of Loch Ness to visit Urquhart Castle and or the Loch Ness Centre Exhibition From there I would head straight through Inverness and pick up the A9 south toward Aviemore

Eilean Donan is a lovely castle, I finally saw it on my ninth trip to Scotland If you have your heart set on seeing it, I wouldn't backtrack to Loch Ness, but rather would hook up with A890 to circle into Inverness from the North
- Scotland Castle Advice - Rick Steves Travel Forum
Since you're going to be in Edinburgh anyway, Edinburgh Castle is almost obligatory Outside of that, Stirling, Blair, and maybe Dunvegan Doune seems to be a favorite with a lot of people, and it's close to Stirling Cawdor, Urquhart, Eilean Donan, and Armadale are worth a miss Balmoral is definitely worth a miss
- Ferry or Bridge? Travelling from Skye to Glencoe - Rick Steves
Last year we took the bridge to Skye We stopped at Eilean Donan Castle for photos We did pay a small fee to walk across the bridge and walk around outside the castle and take more photos We did not go inside for reasons that skyegirl mentions When we left Skye, we took the ferry from Armadale to Mallaig This is what I would recommend that

Enjoy the view of Eilean Donan Castle from the outside, but the inside is, as others have said, a reconstruction Save your limited time for other attractions Urquhart Castle is a very interesting ruin with a picturesque setting, even though Scottish Heritage has gussied it up with a fancy visitor center and it attracts lots of tour buses
- scotland first time itinerary using public transportation
For Eilean Donan, if all you want to do is see the outside of the Castle you could get the Inverness bus from Portree at 0900 as far as Ardelve or Dornie Bridge (opposite sides of the Bridge), see the Castle, then get back on the Glasgow bus - the 1035 from Portree That bus gets you to Fort William at 1340
