Another personal favorite is The Dungeon Fantasy RPG, which is a tailored version of GURPS It does a good job of emulating the genre without falling into some of the traditional design traps of D D It's also a relatively "small" set The core boxed set goes a very long way, and the existing supplements are cool but not vital

I don't think there has to be some grand conspiracy to explain why famous RPG person wants to publish their new rules but also keep making money with their old rules I'd love to have my house system be published and illustrated and liked by fans, even if my job required me to keep using The World's Most Popular Role Playing Game

Star Wars rpg has a decent hybrid system Where you keep track of credits, but also roll to check whether or not items are available where you are Then there are talents that modify what you can find in different places This sort of system is a bit more narrative than a straight D D-like system
