Instead of providing the list of values in the data validation dialog, create a range for the values, where the first one is blank Then use the address of that range for the data validation

The way I've set up the drop-down is Data Tools | Data Validation| Settings --> Allow --> List, and then select my source data which in my case is just a few cells Now although this sets up the drop-down list, it does keep the arrow visible unless I have one of the cells selected How do I make it so that the arrow is always present?
