This also wears the clamping surface on the gear and nut decreasing the torque The best fix is a fully splined mainshaft, a quality 5th gear that has the correct fit to make it a press fit on the shaft, and properly torquing the nut Avoiding rpm's below 1500 in 5th is also a good practice

You can get a fully splined shaft and updated nut Or just pull the tail housing off and put an updated nut on the existing shaft with red locktite My research showed that this fix usually works especially with a 2wd, I recommend doing what I am going to do I plan to assume my NV4500 had the 5th gear fixed

Mine fell off at around 200k miles As a cheap easy fix, I put the upgraded nut on it and peened the threads right on top the nut for awhile with a 3 16 center punch and a 3lb maul Crude, but effective 160K miles and 10 years later it is still hanging tough

well like i said the only true fix is the new shaft, but that gets a little, there is a web site i dont remember what its called if you do a search on this site for like 5th gear fix there is a thread with a link, but really unless you want more then like 500 hp you can get away with a weld on the nut, but once you start gettin up in the hp you will want to build your tranny and the last time
