For me it depends on the genre You can't really compare heavy metal to rap when mixing I try to pick something I know sounds good and is close to the sound I want to achieve I do a lot of rock heavy metal I have Rage Against The Machine's Know Your Enemy and Freedom as a reference

Listen to where the drums are, listen to the perkiness of them The vocals have such a nice warm tone, listen to the dynamics between the vocals and guitars I use Radiohead - National Anthem as a reference to test new monitors on Perfectly polished mix master RAM is probably the best produced album I’ve ever heard
