On the 08's and 09's (all Mazdas, not just the 3's), there is a known problem with the gas cap from the factory It gets stuck if you unscrew it completely, which is a lip issue, which dealers are aware of (no TSB about this) Dealers have the revised fuel cap, which has a revised lip which won't hold the cap onto the filler neck

- P0446 and loose gas cap. . . . could this be the problem
At my parts store, a fuel cap for the 3 is only $20 and made by a reputable company Since the risk would be $70 less it may be worth a try I know it won't have the tether or be OEM, but I just figured I'd let you know an alternate route on the cap

I had this same problem on my 08 5 I got it out by using pliers and twisting it clockwise It just kinda popped out This is a problem known by mazda, and if your car is under warranty then I'm pretty sure they'll fix it for free with a redesigned, new mazda cap Give your dealership a call and they should be able to help you

The fuel filler neck hoses are still connected to the tank, but if you've jacked up the car enough, you can get to the fuel pump retaining ring to replace it without having to remove the tank entirely 2 ) If the clip on the quick release on the fuel line going to the fuel pump breaks, it's impossible to find an OEM replacement
