The 6 2 engine GMs (then) Detroit Diesel division designed was a basic, normally aspirated V-8 diesel with @ 130 hp and @ 250 lb-ft torque These are not to be confused with the automotive diesel engines (350 V-8) that were such a problem in the seventies eighties

Granted part of the genesis for the Duramax, 6 0, and 6 7 Cummins is that the engines needed to meet emissions criteria that the older engines just couldn't be adapted to meet Still, the only older Diesel I'd seriously consider with high mileage would be a 6BT 5 9 Cummins with a P pump Still the best light duty Diesel ever made, bar none

GM: 1977-1980: 5 7L 350 diesel (JUNK--avoid at all costs!!) 1981-1992: 6 2L 379 diesel (1981-92) turbo diesel (1989-92) (better than 5 7, still not great though) 1993-2000: 6 5L Turbo diesel (good mileage, terrible on injectors and injector pumps, outdated and way underpowered when compared to the 7 3L Power Stroke and 5 9L Cummins)
