Auth0 Cognito are similar but not totally comparable, Cognito is most low-level, you have to do most of things by yourself but you can do more if you know how to do it and that's true the doc is a mess Auth0 can do for you a very complex complete auth system in a minute but the custmozation is more complex and some things can not be achieved

one problem with cognito is it isn't multi-region and you can't sync some things like passwords between regions, so once you need multi-region, you have to switch to something else anyway Cognito has been our only major hurdle with going multi-region It also has a poor sla compared to other solutions

cognito is good for understanding concepts and learning info freesciencelessons is good for this as well I’ve only used save my exams a little but I think it’s good for learning concepts if you don’t like watching videos? it also has good past papers but I like using physics and maths tutor for ppqs instead but both are good options
