If I don't have any excess ascended pieces to salvage, I usually just mass-craft whichever lv80 exotic helmet has the cheapest insignia on marketboard (usually something like magi or rabid that people get regularly from salvaging exotics) and directly salvage-into-researchnotes from the crafting menu
