I have owned and run both boats Went fron a 21' Explorer to a 20 Gulf Coast and now a Tran Cat Kind of a natual progression Both are good boats but I would take the Gulf Coast over the Explorer Fit, finish and ride would be why Both do most things well and somewhat the same The Gulf Coast seems to have more room to fish

Gulf squid are great, when I was younger chartering out of Sea Ranch at SPI our group liked fresh squid over shrimp, now fishing mostly out of POC, I still get fresh squid when I can off the shrimp boats

First off Any 4 0 conventional reel will do the job if you can lock down the drag - (I prefer lever drags) secondly, chum them out away from the legs , keep boat running and back away on hook -up - there isn't a winch in the world that can keep em outta the barnacles (unless they pull you outta the boat:biggrin - we use a top shot of 200# fluorocarbon backed on 80# braid, 8 0 gamakatsu octopus
