So here is the real deal If you use your boat the impeller wears, needs replacing If you don't use your boat the impeller sits in the housing with the blades bent over and looses it's elasticity So either way it goes bad Suggested replacement interval is every other year

With the early style (short stiff vanes) impeller t does need to be replaced at an interval no greater than 2 years, but annual is best Usually by the time you get the drive pulled apart and the impeller housing off, what with using new base plate gaskets anyway, you might as well replace it anyway Peace of mind and cheap insurance Chris

Re: 496 Mercruiser HO impeller water pump change as with any overheat situation, the first place to look is the impeller you more than likely have the newer style brass pump, you shouldnt have to replace it unless the bearings seals have gone out on the shaft you definitely need to find all impeller pieces if any hsve broken off check the diy section for mercruiser manuals, follow the links
