TV Tropes is a great source of information, it really breaks down a lot of the things that a lot of people on this website obsess over because they think every trip that comes into their mind is super unique

At a quick glance, it looks like ATT is a lot more lax than TV Tropes, which means you could theoretically just start a trope page on ATT and no one would bat an eye The interface is a lot less intuitive but, to be fair to ATT, TV Tropes had a pretty clunky design back in 2013 (which is when the ATT fork happened)

When TV Tropes started out, it was kind of a "wild west" In the early days, anyone could create new tropes with no TLP, and even when restrictions were added, there were fewer of them, and they were enforced very loosely This resulted in a lot of "chairsy" tropes that don't really fit with the site's current standards for informativeness

TV Tropes is not an authority on anything and it never will be Yet people seem to be trying to make it into one There can be a fun middle ground between "total anarchy" and "Wikipedian pedantry"

In the highlighted definition around 0:24 TVT defines tropes as "devices … not clichés" In my opinion, this use of "trope" is actually a metaphor If a trope is a figure of speech in a verbal medium, then a TV trope is a "figure of speech" in the audiovisual medium of television

Honestly, my entire ability to enter into fandom and media back in the late-2000s early-2010s was TvTropes It’s not remotely uncommon for people to want to watch a specific kind of media with certain tropes, so trope pages are a wonderful way to figure that out
