- M1 handbrake performance very disappointing. . . - MacRumors Forums
The M1 HW encoding using Handbrake is very fast, but the file size is way too big for my needs It is hard to get an objective apples to apples comparison when it comes to quality of Handbrake's SW and HW encoding settings, but when I tried to get a similar quality encode Handbrake SW and HW encoding, the file size of the HW encode was a lot

- MakeMKV and Handbrake Subtitles only during foreign languages . . .
You can use MakeMKV to extract the subtitle streams, and then have Handbrake identify and burn in only the foreign audio portions (as it has done with DVDs in the past)

- CABAC on AppleTV Preset? - HandBrake
The HandBrake WIKI suggests that the preset for AppleTV will pass CABAC=0 to the x264 encoder, disabling CABAC support I have now done a couple of test encodes using the AppleTV preset (which does not generate the CLI option cabac=0) and I'm pretty certain the result has CABAC enabled

I tested GPU-accelerated video encoding on M1 Mac Mini (H 264 VideoToolBox) in Handbrake Beta and constant quality mode (new feature for M1 Macs, it works like -crf in libx264)
