My class just started arc length yesterday, and i'm trying to do a few homework questions I'm stuck on this one: 1 Use the arc length formula to find the length of the curve y=root(2 - x^2) 0 < (or equal to) x < (or equal to) 1 check your answer by noting that the curve is part of a circle

Thanks for your response mathman Not the arc length, but the flattened length I may not be using proper terminology, so I apologize If you could visualize physically holding the arc segment and and then bending it flat, what would the flat length be? Thank you!

So, I would just use the arc length formula? Do I not have to plug it back into the the formula 2pi times radius over 4? You are to use the arc length formula and compare that to the arc that you can easily calculate from the circle It seems like you are missing the entire point of the problem statement

The arc length is s = r\cdot\theta and the chord length should be c=2r\cdot\sin\left (\frac {\theta} {2}\right) , where \theta is the included angle in radians If you take the ratio c s , you get one equation to solve for \theta , then you can solve for the radius Thank you for your reply
