I have always put down nitrogen 46-0-0 prior to first cutting hay as that is really the bulk of our hay cuttings by far I will follow-up and apply nitrogen after first cutting to give second cutting a boost However, just scanning some forum posts, what I think I’m reading is that most put down their nitrogen after first cutting vs prior to it

OP I would recommend a flail mower It does a better job with residual Do not cut lower than 5 inches To control amount of hay until you can take care of it properly, focus on lime, phosphorus, potash, and limit the amount of nitrogen
