- Shelf life for denatured alcohol - FineWoodworking
Take it from this old petrochemical guy, your denatured alcohol will not go bad, it won't absorb significant amounts of water from the air, it has no "heavy ends" - just ethanol and a little butyl acetate or other chemical to render it undrinkable - it will not turn itself into any other chemicals
- Problem Sourcing Denatured Alcohol - FineWoodworking
The alcohol you ordered is better than the store bought denatured alcohol that has methanol (a poison added so it can be sold to circumvent it being taxed and sold as a consumable product) At 190 proof it’s pure grain alcohol
- Where to buy denatured alcohol? - FineWoodworking
Their “Green” denatured alcohol is 80%-100% ethanol, and 3%-7% methanol, a major reason Klean Strip Green is often recommended as the best solvent for shellac * *As of July of 2020, Klean Strip now has their “Green” denatured alcohol listed as discontinued Stock up if you find some Where can’t you buy denatured alcohol?
- Denatured Alcohol - Taxidermy. net Forum
As an experiment(and because I got it cheap LOL) I tried a mixture of 50 50 ethanol and water Works the same as denatured alcohol and water I have left skins in for as long as 10 days with no ill effects I post this incase someone can get the ethanol cheaper or the denatured alcohol is not readily available
- Another substitute for denatured alcohol? - Classic Camp Stoves
You can get away with mixing isopropyl of the 70 to 91% variety with denatured alcohol to "extend" what you have or reduce the cost of methanol I've tried this previously with varying success Don't burn hand sanitizer in anything but an open burner since the glycerin is the nasty leftover stuff that doesn't like to burn
- Behkol alcohol? Substitute mixing shellac? - FineWoodworking
I have used a lot of shellac, mostly with off the shelf denatured alcohol, have also tried behkol, other than the price I didn't notice much difference I agree what you want is a large percentage of ethanol so 190 proof grain would be best if you don't mind the expense Personally I have not tried it but intend to at some point
- Alcohol Disolve Lacquer?!!! - FineWoodworking
The Crown "Denatured Alcohol" as described, doesn't appear to fall into any of the denatured alcohol formulas in the US regulation These DO NOT include any language like "add at least 10 gallons of methanol " but DO include prescriptions to add certain amounts of denaturants to alcohol of at least 160 proof, or at least 185 proof
- White Gas or denatured alcohol? | Classic Camp Stoves
your Svea 66 is the more commonly called ' the swedish Army ' stove, using a Svea or Trangia alcohol burner As Doc stated, never use anything but denatured alcohol in it Isopropol alky doesn't work very well either I get my alky at home depot, $ 13 per gallon you can also use Heet in the Yellow bottle, found in auto parts stores
- Shellac Solvent: Grain Alcohol vs. Denatured Alcohol
Most people simply use commercially available “denatured” alcohol Denatured alcohol is a general alcohol-based solvent used for a variety of applications across many industries Mixed with shellac, it will produce a serviceable finish However, it has some problems when it comes to shellac The first is that there is no industry regulation
- Denatured alcohol - Taxidermy. net Forum
Denatured alcohol is poisonous It doesn't need to be in your lungs, and it is absorbed through the skin and goes straight to the liver through the bloodstream It will work, and there is some beautiful taxidermy out there to prove it
