I did this route from the LA area to Grand Canyon a couple of years ago You can do it in a day -- we drove to Williams Arizona and stayed there, since the hotels were much less expensive than at the Grand Canyon itself (Williams is about an hour south of the Grand Canyon)

Grand Canyon National Park is about a 5 hour drive from Vegas (to either the north or south rim), so actually a single day isn't even enough to see it when you factor in the drive time

The second day is planned for the Grand Canyon, but I'm afraid we might want two full days there The thing to remember is that this will be the first heavy camping weekend of summer and traffic is likely to be challenging everywhere -- you will be extremely fortunate if you are able to average more than 53 mph over the course of the day

I've gotten some info about the San Diego to Grand Canyon leg of the route from other threads, but would really like some suggestions for stops that would be interesting for a 6 year old Especially from El Paso to Anaheim and the Grand Canyon back to Fort Worth The Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico is worth a stop

From there we would like to see Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and a one day stay in Vegas before heading back to LA which is where my son wants to spend a couple of days doing the sights Generally you should plan to drive no more than 500 miles in a day and if you can limit that to 350 or so -- much better

I would suggest taking Hwy 89 north from Flagstaff and then taking the Hwy 395 loop to Sunset Crater and Wupakti National Monument and entering the Grand Canyon at Cameron and stopping at all the scenic overlooks on the way
