I agree with Gary, you need to check the levels of iron in your water A water softener will not solve any iron problems above 3 or 4 mg l YOu can check on the exact number A whole house birm filter can solve the problem depending on the PH and bacteria in your water Birm filters will not work if there is existing bacteria of PH lower then 6 8

At your level of iron a seperate iron filter would only be needed for a low quality softener I recommend a Kinetico 2030s Since these are twin tanks, they backwash with soft, iron-free water which extends resin life They are very efficient in both water and salt use and should be on the low end of your present quotes
